- 1:04:30 – L8r Sk8r of Roller Derby Rule of the Day joins us to clarify the WFTDA Rules Clarifications!
- 1:36:45 – Show Close
This week the ladies attempt to take over! We have Kutta Betch from Rat City Rollergirls in the studio with Megatron, and Rachel Rotten returns for a second week in a row. (Chrome swoons!)
We continue our preview coverage of this year’s Big 5 tournament season and set our sights on our backyard: Western regionals! Bay Area Derby Girl Eva Menace joins us to talk about hosting Bay of Reckoning, and of course we take a look at the match-ups we’re anticipating watching in person next weekend. Yes! IN PERSON. Megatron, Pitchit and Chrome will be in Richmond next week. We’ll do our best to look busy and official.
But THEN! L8R SK8R jumps in to even the gender score and talk with us about the recent WFTDA rules clarifications, complete with a jumping Justice video. You will stay sober, though, as he only utters the drinking game word once.
A hearty THANK YOU to everyone in Listenertown who helped fund Go-Go Gidget’s Kickstarter campaign! Because of your generosity her documentary on the Vagine Regime is that much closer to completion. Since we’re talking VR: did you know the boys of roller derby also want in on the queer fun? Check out the Disco Sticks!
We also want to show our appreciation to our listeners, and fans of roller derby in general, who are not afraid to voice questions about and criticisms of our sport. This week the cast chats a bit about friend of the show Kevin G’s phone call from last week, and we address an email we received from a concerned fan after a recent Minnesota/Kansas City bout. As much as we choose to celebrate the best sport we know, we also value the somewhat awkward and challenging process of growth. We humbly thank you for considering us an important resource and avenue for you to share your concerns. It makes all of us better when we keep lines of communication open. Of course, y’all know the channels to contact us. Please use them!
Finally, near the end of the show we talked about the Fundraiser to help with Holly Gohardly‘s insurance deductibles & associated costs from her breaking her collarbone. Please click the link if you’d like to help.
This week’s cast:
- Jason Megatron Burrows
- Kutta Betch
- Rachel Rotten
- Eva Menace
- L8R SK8R
- Chrome Molly
- and Pitchit!

I am embarrassed! I only said Balls (drink) once! Maybe we need a RDRotD drinking game. How about, any time L8R SK8R starts rambling on about some inane semantic about a rule, drink. You’ll be shitfaced after my segment on this episode!!
L8R
Oh my god, disambiguated skater opinion on the hype and hysteria about different slow strateg(IES!!!).
“I’m not seeing it as much as people are insisting it’s out there.”
Fucking. Marry. Me.
Seriously. Are you at westerns? I buy you a drink. I carry you on my back. I give you kisses.
@Muffin
YES.
Also, Minnesota fans complain of Minnesota loss? There are effective counter-strategies to the “sausage”. Learn them. Teams have beaten Minn playing “FUGPMD”. Also, don’t make your fans into monsters or dissatisfied fans by publicly vilifying any strategy you can’t counter.
“There were a lot of powerjams that Minnesota had given up.”
Don’t buy the f*ing hype. We’re doing real well with fans and sponsors, as a sport. People love arguing about things on the internet. People REALLY LOVE getting jacked up on mob mentality at bouts. The internet convulsions are their own sport, and I’m over it.
Oh, and btw – the condescension about how “we” need to start “thinking about” the game that we play, seriously? Yeah, bro, we’ve never had that conversation. We just spend our lives dicking around and hating you. For real.
HEY GUYS, WHAT IS YOUR PERFECT SOLUTION AGAIN?!
Hey Derby Deeds, thanks for the shout-out about the Post-Champs Skatepark Excursion. For those of you on The Facebook, here’s the event that PItchit mentioned: https://www.facebook.com/events/425000454204529
Dilo was not a typo… did I just coin a new derby term BTW??
Now if your drank to Dilo instead of balls you would have done much better ;-P
I’ll send the back story of Dilo with attachment to DD fb page, can’t fo an attachment here.
Never mind skipped posting to fb page , I sent to submit@derbydeeds
Sausage derby, Jacob’s ladder, passive offense, train..this has been around as a strategy enough that any teams that have paid attention should be able to combat this and make it an ineffective strategy. If you make a strategy ineffective then guess what..the opposing team will STOP DOING IT.
Just like with the slo/no starts..don’t want that guess what teams evolved..they started taking knee starts they SKATED FORWARD…this is the same.
Our sport is played by 2 teams so ONE team has got to make the decision that they are NOT going to play that way.
If the team you are playing likes to run the train on a power jam..don’t LET them..grab that first girl out of the pack and push her forward with you, get BEHIND that line on the outsie and hold the wall at the back. DO SOMETHING TO COUNTER IT!
@Muffin
…only if i can give you kisses back for your comments below? swoon. let’s be friends immediately please?
No. That wasn’t the issue at all. The issue was the play style. Minnesota fans are used to fast, hard-hitting derby — they have been getting it that way for nine seasons now. This was the first time that any team has spent any time just sausaging rather than playing the sport as it has been widely understood to be played.
In regards to who is suppose to police the skater sitting out for three jams, it’s supposed to be the Lineup Tracker. People forget they’re officials. Sadly, they aren’t required by the rules, but 99% of bouts have them.
