Battle on the Bank is NEXT WEEKEND. LA Derby Dolls and Team Legit have things to say about it. Should you care to travel from Listernertown to Everett, you can find all the ticket and travel details about the tournament at the official website. Keep up to date via their Facebook page as well.
We are thrilled to announce Derby Skinz as our online broadcast sponsor for Battle on the Bank V. Thank you Derby Skinz, not just for keeping heineys shiny but getting our mugs online and our voices fully implanted in all the heads of Listenertown.
Colonel Skirts of Wasatch Roller Derby drops by the studio for a quick chat about their victory over Angel City Derby Girls. The Western region keeps heating up, huh?
Check out the most recent installment of LADD’s After the Whistle with Evil E, featuring a recap of the Sirens’ victory over the Tough Cookies.
Do derby skaters (and coaches, for that matter) have a responsibility to remain loyal to one team only? Harrisburg Area Roller Derby’s Merry Khaos poses this question, among others, in her most recent Examiner article “A Question of Derby Loyalty?” We hash this out a bit on the show this week, and as always we welcome your opinions and comments.
Andi just cannot stop talking about the Derby Nerd. Just go ahead and bookmark his blog already. Andi will also be talking (as in: announcing) at Klash of the Kootenays, the Roller Derby Association of Canada’s Western region tournament, taking place June 15-17. West Kootenay Women’s Roller Derby’s website has more information. And then there’s the matter of ShitShow Rodeo getting their banked track back up this very weekend! Get in touch via their Facebook page for details.
Do you need an introduction to flat track roller derby? There’s an app for that! (iPhone and iPad only; sorry Android nerds.)
Apparently skating just isn’t enough for some of you. Damned creative people! Check out Impact City Roller Derby, a derby board game, with cards featuring skaters from Naptown Roller Girls. If games aren’t your thing, perhaps you would like some art for your walls? Ange “Dangerass” Stephens from the Newcastle Roller Derby League created The Lineup, a rather exquisite photographic exhibition. The link also doubles as a silent auction, with proceeds helping the league’s representative squad get to The Great Southern Slam.
If we missed something, help us out! We’re only as good as the information you share. So share it!
Our cover photo this week is from Wasatch’s game against Treasure Valley & was taken by Jason Santti! Check out his work at http://jsantti.smugmug.com/

I say leave it without a photo and it can be known as ‘the episode without a photo.’
During the “to run up the score” segment, I can understand the argument that blowouts are tough for fans to watch, but weren’t the Gotham/Long Island, Gotham/Connecticut, and London/Auld Reekie games all closed? Gotham streamed the Long Island and Connecticut games, but I don’t think any fans actually paid for those games.
The points raised are obviously still valid, but in the case of those three games, at least no fans paid money to see such blowouts…
Also the London / Auld Reekie game was closed too.
Too much caffeine, I’ve got to read before I write. Yes, no fans were abused in the making of those blowouts. IMO, blowouts are a scheduling problem. Don’t want your fans to see a blowout? Don’t schedule one. If you really want to do one, do it behind closed doors. Makes no sense to change rules so that a low skill team and a high skill team appear competitive, and I doubt it can be done anyway. Want your fans to see good games? Schedule competitive teams to play. There’s a reason the top ranked teams have home seasons, it’s good business.
Lasy year I belive Gotham played against the top teams in the East. Why they couldn’t do THAT is beyond me.
As for BOTB V predicitons…..
8th-Salt City
7th-Tilted Thunder
6th-OC
5th-TXRD
4th-AZDD
3rd-SDDD
2nd-LADD
and your winner-Legit (meaning either we SHOULD have had a new champion THIS year or Legit defends next year)
The Derby Loyalty discussion was really great – way too multifaceted to cover in one show… hoping to hear the conversation continue out in Listener Land.
A few weeks back someone suggested in comments section that DD covers the topic of derby training and I think that is one of the main “secrets” that leagues do not share, even if they do share strategy and basic skills. I can’t go online and read details about the off-skates workouts that Gotham uses or Oly’s speed skating tips. Also a major factor in causing a blow out game – different training focuses, requirements, commitment, etc.
True, none of those strategies or skills are available online, but they are often available at clinics and events like Rollercon. I reckon that brings up the issue of leagues taking advantage of such clinics and events, as well as having the resources for such things.
Oh, Lacey. Yes, I have more time now that Jack is here.
…he’s asleep currently…
Lacey is not allowed to drink 7 beers, she gets violent!
The derby loyalty discussion was great. If a skater plays on more than one team on top of their home league and/or travel team and their games overlap, ultimately it is their decision to make a call on which game they decide to play on.
In regards to Carmen and Legit/RCRG All Stars, it would be up to Carmen to factor in and prioritize her loyalty and commitments as a travel team skater and captain of the All Stars. Surely it’s something that she needs to discuss with her travel team, as I know that if I were one of her team mates I would feel somewhat betrayed if she hadn’t consulted the team as a whole on her thoughts regarding the game overlap, considering she is such an integral part of the team as well as the captain.
As a fan I would like to think that someone like Carmen would make a decision that’s best for all parties involved. However on the other hand, if there was a game that Legit were playing on 14th July, which is also the same night of RCRG All Stars’ bout against Rose City, I’d be pissed off if she chose to play with Legit because I’m travelling all the way from Australia to see Rat City play and want to see one of my favourite players lead her team to victory on their home turf.
I think a team should have to earn the right to play a Gotham, not have it as a right of passage to get beat up by them.
But a team is going to learn a whole lot more, that they can use right now, if they play a team that can only beat them by 100 points instead of 500+. Gotham is on a level so completely different from what you could possibly achieve within a season, that no level of rationalizing justifies putting yourself in that position.
That said, with the threat of a straight numerical ranking system and no one knowing how it’s going to work out, what serious team with a potential stake in East Playoffs would have risked their rankings against Gotham?
If THAT is the case Busta, those teams are BIGGER Delta Bravos than DOUCHEland
