Emerald City Rollergirls’ lovely and charming Bullet Brains joins us in recapping all the Big O action, and boy howdy was there a lot of it! Derby action! Afterparty action! Record-breaking jump action! Really! Puget Sound Outcast Derby’s Speed Dealer shatters the men’s record, and Slaughter County Roller Vixens’ On’Da Sligh represents for the women.
As usual, we recap as much regional and international derby as we can, as well as fill your schedule with more derby to watch. This weekend flat track takes to the banked as the Oly Rollers take on the San Diego Derby Dolls’ Wildfires. The boutcast will be up on derbydolls.tv.
We get deeper into our thoughts and responses to WindyMan’s For the Fans, By the Fans essay. Hope we’re all still friends.
This week’s cast:

I’m listening to the podcast as I edit photos from the Big O. I have 5-6 full bouts to go and a little of this and a little of that left. All the Big O photos can be found here:

and I’ve picked out some of my favorites (The Best of the Big O) here:

Also, many other photographers have been posting links to photos on the Big O facebook fan page.
And ya gotta check out Nicolas Charest’s Big O highlight set on facebook… very nice!

I see that the “paying fan” didn’t get much credence. I find that rather disappointing. I guess because I don’t volunteer or anything like that, I just pay for my ticket, buy merch on occasion that I’m that low on the totempole.
I too was somewhat disappointed at the discussion of Windyman’s blogpost. It seemed like most of the discussion revolved around semantics (“can you really classify skaters into three groups?” “I don’t like the word ‘customers’.”, “What about the volunteers?”), and it’s pretty clear Dumptruck has some strong opinions about Angus Con.
IMO, the most vocal criticisms coming from the fans is with regard to specific tactics like slow derby, delays/scrums at the start whistle, etc.–tactics that, rightly or wrongly, the fans consider “boring”. This complaint has been ongoing at least since 2009, the WFTDA in particular has done little to address them, and some skaters actually defend them. It’s not unreasonable for a fan to conclude that the WFTDA doesn’t take the criticism of fans seriously. Putting aside the question of these particular tactics, does this example illustrate the problem Windyman was trying to describe?
I will say that Joe Rollerfan’s comments at the end were dead on; I wish more had been said about this point, but i understand if you don’t want to call any skater “mediocre”.
