As Megatron and Sheeza mentioned in break-down of Legit vs LA Ri-Ettes — the superior endurance of Flat Track skaters versus Banked Track was [once again] demonstrated.
It was clear in the 4th quarter of that game that many of the banked skaters started to run out of gas– even penalties from sloppy skating seemed to increase noticeably. There was def more hard hitting in the second half– but I think the biggest factor was simply that Legit had waaaaay more in the tank in the 4th quarter than the Ri-Ettes.
Right now I think it’s the biggest Achilles heel of the banked teams, and something the training team in LA is really working hard to try to overcome. I think most Banked skaters will tell you, skating the track on the flat is physically harder work— couple that with flat’s 2 minute jams and longer period times without breaks— flat trackers def have a conditioning advantage over their banked sisters.
It will be interesting to see how banked leagues overcome this inherent advantage as we see more A-list flat teams venturing over to play the banked game. I see a lot of emphasis on CROSS TRAINING in the future for banked travel teams.
Bravo Tre & Nikki! GO JET CITY!!!
I found the conversation about “superstar” men in derby versus “team player” women interesting, to put it mildly. If many men are looking for star status over team-building, how does that explain the preponderance of male coaches in derby? It might seem like I’m comparing apples and oranges, but will we have to wait until this present generation of skaters retires before we see more women leading teams?
Also: kudos to Jet City for giving back to other up-and-coming leagues. I might just have to drop y’all a line to see if you’d like to kick some Southern Oregon ass sometime in the future, should schedules allow.
I loved hearing the conversation regarding co-ed teams, Men’s play style vs. women’s, etc. I cannot comment on Men’s derby so much, though, as I have only a limited experience with it. We had a Men’s derby bout at our Red Red Invitational in Woodland, CA this last December, but the teams consisted of very green players. I’d say 80% of the man were refs, and some coaches and volunteers of Women’s leagues. It was intensely physical and, quite frankly, dangerous. But I don’t know if that is because of the inexperience or the gender of the players. Maybe a bit of both?
Anyway, I have to say that I am quite happy about the WFTDA decision to include co-ed teams in their insurance plan. It will only become more inclusive from here out. I can’t wait for my chance to scrimmage with co-ed teams (perhaps at this year’s Roller Con?). I think it would be a blast to play with and against some derby brothers!
I say, anything Derby is automatically awesome!
Thanks for the show this week! I am an avid fan!

Hi, I just wanted to clarify the Montreal bout with Oly. We will be hosting Montreal for an evening, open to the public game on Feb. 13th. Everyone is welcome
That’s great news!
Do you think Megatron’s listeners truly understand and appreciate what the man looks like in real life?
…frightening
